Gowanus is an up-and-coming neighborhood roughly bordered by Wyckoff Street to the north, the Prospect Expressway to the south, Hoyt Street to the west, and 4th Avenue to the east. It is situated just south of Boerum Hill and between the neighborhoods of Carroll Gardens and Park Slope.
Located along the Gowanus Canal, it was once an active center of industrial and shipping activities. Today residential zoning has attracted people to its lower prices than, and proximity to, Park Slope and Carroll Gardens. It is now also served by bike routes along the Canal on the Union Street and 3rd Street bridge - the oldest one of four remaining retractable bridges in the country.
It is easily accessible by F & G trains at the Smith Street and 4th Avenue-9th Street stations, and the R & M trains at the 4th Avenue Station.
